Enter your running pace and get your speed in mph, km/h, and minutes per kilometre.
Common paces:
| Unit | Result |
|---|---|
| Speed (mph) | — mph |
| Speed (km/h) | — km/h |
| Pace (min/km) | — min/km |
| Treadmill setting | — mph |
Running pace and speed are two sides of the same coin. Pace tells you how long each mile takes; speed tells you how many miles you cover each hour. This converter handles both directions and also outputs your equivalent pace in minutes per kilometre — useful for international races or metric training plans.

Minutes per mile is the standard pace unit used by runners in the United States and the United Kingdom. It expresses how long it takes to cover one mile. A lower number means faster running — a 6:00/mile pace is faster than a 9:00/mile pace. Most US running apps, GPS watches, and race results default to this unit.
Miles per hour is a speed unit, not a pace unit. It tells you how many miles you cover in one hour. Treadmills in the US almost always display speed in mph rather than pace, which is the primary reason runners need to convert between the two. A 10:00/mile pace is exactly 6 mph.
Minutes per kilometre is the metric equivalent of min/mile, used in most countries outside the US and UK. International races, European training apps, and metric GPS watches typically use min/km. A 9:00/mile pace converts to approximately 5:35/km.
Kilometres per hour is the metric speed unit used by treadmills sold outside the US, as well as most European and Australian fitness platforms. It is equivalent in concept to mph but uses kilometres instead of miles. 1 mph = 1.60934 km/h.
Divide 60 by your pace in decimal minutes. Convert the seconds part first: seconds ÷ 60 gives the decimal portion. Then: mph = 60 ÷ (minutes + seconds ÷ 60). For example, 8:30/mile = 60 ÷ (8 + 30/60) = 60 ÷ 8.5 = 7.06 mph.
A 9:00/mile pace equals 6.67 mph (60 ÷ 9 = 6.667). This is a comfortable conversational jogging pace for many recreational runners and is a common target for beginner 5K training programmes. At 6.67 mph, a half marathon takes just under 2 hours.
A 10:00/mile pace is exactly 6 mph. This is one of the easiest conversions to remember. At 6 mph on a treadmill, you are running a 10-minute mile pace. A 5K at this pace finishes in about 31 minutes.
A 7:00/mile pace equals 8.57 mph (60 ÷ 7 = 8.571). This is a solid intermediate running speed. Runners at this pace typically finish a 10K in about 43 minutes and a half marathon in about 1 hour 32 minutes.
Multiply your min/mile pace by 0.62137. For example, 8:00/mile × 0.62137 = 4.971 min/km = 4:58/km. You can also divide by 1.60934. This conversion is useful when racing abroad or using an international training plan that uses metric pacing.
Set the treadmill to 6.7 mph to run a 9:00/mile pace. Most treadmills in the US display speed in mph, so set it to 6.7. If your treadmill shows km/h, use 10.8 km/h instead — both are equivalent to a 9-minute mile pace.
