Last updated: April 2026

For a 55″ TV, sit between 2.1 m and 3.5 m away.
4K minimum: 2.1 m  ·  Comfortable: 2.8 m  ·  HD maximum: 3.5 m

TV viewing distance is based on the diagonal screen measurement. The standard guideline is 1.5× to 2.5× the screen diagonal. The closer end of the range suits 4K Ultra HD content — high pixel density means you won't see individual pixels even at close range. The farther end suits HD (1080p) content and larger rooms.

The formula in centimetres: multiply the diagonal in cm by 1.5 for the minimum and by 2.5 for the maximum. A 55 inch TV has a 139.7 cm diagonal: 139.7 × 1.5 ÷ 100 = 2.1 m minimum.

Frequently asked questions

How far should I sit from a 55 inch TV?

For a 55 inch TV the recommended viewing distance is 2.1 m (minimum) to 3.5 m (maximum). For 4K content you can sit at 2.1 m without seeing pixels. For HD content, 2.5–3.0 m is a comfortable middle ground. The 55 inch screen diagonal is 139.7 cm: multiply by 1.5 for the minimum (2.1 m) and by 2.5 for the maximum (3.5 m).

What is the formula for TV viewing distance?

The standard formula: minimum distance = screen diagonal × 1.5, comfortable = diagonal × 2.0, maximum = diagonal × 2.5. Use the diagonal in centimetres and divide by 100 to get metres. For a 65 inch TV (165.1 cm diagonal): 165.1 × 1.5 ÷ 100 = 2.5 m minimum, 165.1 × 2.5 ÷ 100 = 4.1 m maximum.

Does viewing distance change for 4K vs HD?

Yes. With 4K Ultra HD you can sit at the minimum distance (diagonal × 1.5) without seeing individual pixels. With a 1080p HD screen, sitting closer than diagonal × 1.8 may reveal pixelation on large screens — 55 inch and above. In practice, most people don't notice the difference above 2 metres. The main reason to use the 4K range is if your room forces you to sit closer than 2.5 m from a large screen.

Can I sit too close to a TV?

Sitting close is not medically harmful, but it causes eye strain and neck fatigue as you move your head to follow fast-moving content. Below the minimum distance (diagonal × 1.5) the screen also fills more of your peripheral vision than feels natural for relaxed viewing. If your room is small and you must sit close, a smaller TV will be more comfortable than a larger one viewed at short range.
